Political Science Internship Program Details

The Department of Political Science encourages its students to serve as a intern during their junior or senior years. Internships are available at the local, state, federal, and international level and in every branch of government—executive, legislative, and judicial. Internships are also available with candidates running for political office, political parties, interest groups (including nonprofit and lobbying organizations), and private firms engaged in governmental relations and issue research.

Students may receive up to three hours of credit in either POS 4940 Political Internship or PAD 4940 Judicial Internship. All Internships are graded pass/fail (S/U).  Students can apply no more than three hours of POS/PAD 4940 toward their major.

Students are expected to work at their internship 10-12 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters, 14-16 hours during summer C, and 24-28 hours during summer A and B.

In addition to their intern duties, students are required to keep a daily log and write a 10-12 page research paper that blends the relevant academic literature with insights gained from the student’s internship. The paper can be on a topic of the student’s choosing, but it must related to the internship and it must be pre-approved by Professor Daniel Smith, Political Science Internship Coordinator. The daily journal and paper are due at noon on the last day of classes of the semester.

Students are responsible for arranging their own internships, but the internship coordinator and other members of the faculty can recommend any number of intern possibilities. Given the competitive nature of some internships, students are advised to contact possible intern placements several months prior to the semester during which they would serve the internship.

Students are eligible to enroll for credit for an internship no more than two weeks after a semester has begun. The student will be responsible for any late fees charged by the Registrar.

Once students have secured an internship, they must fill out a short application to be enrolled and to receive academic credit. Applications can be obtained in the Department of Political Science, 234 Anderson Hall, or may be printed off this website. Click HERE to obtain an application on-line.

For further information about intern possibilities, please contact Professor Daniel A. Smith (dasmith@polisci.ufl.edu), Political Science Internship Coordinator, Department of Political Science, 003 Anderson Hall.
