Marcus E. Hendershot, Assistant Professor (Ph.D., Washington University, May 2006). Dr. Hendershot's interests generally are located within the field of American politics, but his primary focus is on the judicial branch. His current research identifies cyclical patterns within the lower federal court appointment process (i.e., periods of independent executive selection of nominees tend to be followed by periods of substantial senatorial influence) that in turn help explain recent levels of contentiousness. He also is looking at macro-level explanations of the emergence of this conflict. Utilizing time series methodology, empirical support for partisan realignment, judicial agenda, and interest group hypotheses can be found, meaning that the roots of appointment conflict tend to be numerous and co-integrated.
