The Ph.D. in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations is designed primarily to train those interested in scholarly careers, though individuals with such degrees may also pursue work in more applied fields. Like the M.A., the Ph.D. is a generalized degree that gives students with interests in specific issues or geographical areas enough flexibility to tailor their programs to meet these needs. Departmental guidelines for the Ph.D. in Political Science (committees, qualifying exams, dissertations, etc.) apply, except where otherwise indicated. To obtain the Ph.D. in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, students must successfully complete the following:

Political Science core sequence:

A Major Field in International Relations that includes the following (15 hours):

At least two (2) of the following survey seminars:

The remaining two courses may be any 6000-level INR course, or any POS 6000-level course with an explicit focus on international relations.

Students wishing to do minor field work in International Relations may complete one of the following in addition to the Departmental requirements as listed above:

Minor examination field in International Relations (9 hours):

Two of the following:

Minor field comprehensive examination in International Relations

- or -

Minor NON-examination field in International Relations (6 hours):
